Chorale Conversations: Bradley Daley

Date

You’ll be performing the role of Gerontius in the upcoming performance of ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ with Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and Brisbane Chorale. Tell us about what this work means to you.

The role of Gerontius is a tremendous journey for any tenor. There is no other role I know of where you follow the passage of the soul through death and redemption. I even get to meet God! The role is a great challenge – you need to move seamlessly between Gerontius’s inner monologue, declamatory passages of prayer, and sudden passionate and sincere spiritual outpourings.

Do you have any special memories associated with performing this role?

Sharing the stage with a full orchestra and a choir in full flight is always a special occasion.

Did you ever have any career in mind other than professional singer and if so, what was it?

I originally wanted to be an actor.

When did you first know you wanted to be a singer?

I sang from a very young age, and went on to study acting. It was there that a music tutor suggested I might have a potential career as an opera singer.

What advice would you give to young classical singers just starting out on their careers?

Just sing every day. You will eventually work it out.

Do you have a favourite ‘party piece’ to sing from the tenor repertoire and if so, what is it and why is it your favourite?

I have many, now where‘s the party? My most recent party trick is singing Siegfried in Wagner‘s Ring Cycle.
