You’re going to be featuring in Brisbane Chorale’s upcoming performance of Beethoven’s ‘Mass In C’ as the tenor soloist. What are you most looking forward to about performing this work?
I’m really looking forward to performing Beethoven’s Mass in C. The tenor solo has some lovely lyrical moments, especially in the Benedictus and Gloria and it’ll be great to bring that to life alongside the other three soloists, Brisbane Chorale and Sinfonia of St Andrew’s.
What performers or artists inspire you the most and why?
Day to day, I find inspiration and motivation in my peers at UQ, who constantly push me to grow as a singer and performer. I am also inspired by famous classical tenors, particularly Jussi Björling, Francisco Araiza, and Bruce Ford. Their strong technical foundations and emotive use of text have had a profound influence on my own approach to singing.
What is your favourite concert or performance memory so far and why?
This is a bit out of left field, but my favourite concert memory is probably singing with the chorus in QSO’s Cinematic a few years ago. The repertoire was so much fun to perform, especially with the orchestra — highlights included O Fortuna from Carmina Burana and Duel of the Fates from Star Wars.
As a singer/musician, where would you like to be in five years’ time?
Over the next five years I would love to continue developing as a performer and honing my skills in oratorio and opera, with a particular focus on Baroque repertoire.
Finally, for a bit of fun, please share with us a story of when a performance didn’t quite go as planned and how you got through it!
This was all the way back in primary school. I remember waiting to go on stage to sing for a grandparents day concert and one of my friends thought it was a good idea to try on my glasses… He was a bit too enthusiastic trying to put them on his face and bent them so far they snapped. I’m fairly blind so walking onto that stage without falling and getting through that performance was quite an achievement I think.
