You’ll be performing the role of the Angel in the upcoming performance of The Dream of Gerontius with Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and Brisbane Chorale. This will be your debut performance in the role. What are you most looking forward to about the performance?

It’s such a profoundly moving and spiritual work. I believe anyone who has lost someone dear can find a part of themselves in this music. Often, we don’t have the chance to say goodbye in the way we hoped—and we’re left with questions about what lies beyond. For me, singing the Angel is a deeply meaningful experience. It feels like a reassurance that the soul returns to its place of origin—to peace, to light. Through this music, I hope to offer comfort, connection, and a sense of healing. It’s a chance to honour love, loss, and the beauty.

When did you first know you wanted to be a singer?

I was five years old when I saw an opera singer perform, and I was completely mesmerised by the sound coming out of a human body. I remember thinking, “How can a person make such a beautiful sound that vibrates in the air and travels to the heart of another?” That moment stayed with me.

Did you ever have any career in mind other than professional singing—and if so, what was it?

I always had a passion for teaching and caring for others. Now, working with young singers at the University of Queensland, I feel that part of me has come full circle. Guiding and mentoring the next generation of artists has become a new and very fulfilling passion.

What advice would you give to young classical singers just starting out on their careers?

Be the best prepared person in the room. That will always serve you well. Learn to connect deeply with the music, and never lose your passion. It’s your inner fire that will carry you through both the triumphs and the challenges.

Do you have a favourite ‘party piece’ to sing from the mezzo-soprano repertoire, and if so, what is it and why?

It would have to be Habanera from Carmen. Maybe because it speaks about love—and love, to me, is the foundation of everything in life. I’ll never forget when my son, at just seven years old, said to me, “Mum, do you know what the strongest power in the world is? Love.” The new generation is so wise! 🥰

Throughout your career, we’re sure you’ve had many memorable performances. Has there been a particular favourite?

Every performance is special in its own way. I’ve always loved the process—the rehearsals, the collaboration, the emotional journey. Being on stage is a privilege, and I treasure it every time. That said, singing at iconic theatres like La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and the Sydney Opera House—these were unforgettable experiences. I feel incredibly fortunate to have stood on those legendary stages.
